Cristiano Ronaldo
Ballon d'Or 2014
As Cristiano Ronaldo was getting ready to win his third Ballon D’Or, MezzoLab got to work on another video celebrating his 2014 achievements. The video was released right after the award ceremony. It was meant to work whether he won or lost: we just had to take out the Ballon d’Or reference on the second shot, and the video was good to go. Fortunately, he won!
Styleframes
As we were searching and writing down all Ronaldo’s records, we were confronted with reality: this guy is a machine. We wanted to get a lot of records on screen, but with on-screen time, we chose to highlight the best, and leave some of the others to appear on the corners or borders of the composition. In that way, they are still there, so if any Ronaldo fan want’s to see the video 3 ou 4 more times, they can notice all the details. So, to honor that, we started to draw some moodboards and styleframes infused with references to precision, performance and data.

Editing & Post
We then selected some of the best moments of the calendar year: best goals, shots, dribbles, freekicks and much more. They were so many that it was really hard to cut them down to less than 2 minutes of video.
In the motion graphics stage, we continued with some of the metaphors that had been established in the styleframes. We applied glitch effects to some of the information, while also contrasting that with slow and fluid moves on some of the progress bars and performance stats that appear throughout. We tried to illustrate these two ideas: the high-tech and almost machine like performance, but at the same time the smoothness of Ronaldos moves. We used a lot of information on screen to really give this idea of overwhelming data and records. In the process, we also discovered that some of the chosen colors wouldn't work that well when they were on top of some shots. So we generally toned down the color usage, leaving it only for more subtle accents.
